Pemba Island, north of the better known Zanzibar Island is not to be confused with Pemba in Mozambique. It is just 30 miles (50kms) from Zanzibar. Besides the relaxed and exciting ambiance, Pemba Island is also offers world class drift or reef diving. Pemba is favoured by divers and those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of Zanzibar. Although generally quiet and rural, this island hosts some great bull-fights emanating from the era of Portuguese colonialists. Mafia Island, south of the better-known Zanzibar has white sandy beach with crystal clear water. This island is little known to many travelers. But discerning divers consider Mafia Island as one of the best spots for deep sea diving. The coral reefs around this island teem with undersea creatures of all kinds including endangered and rare species like whale sharks, dugong and bottle-nose dolphins.
