
The ecosystem of Lake Nakuru National Park comprises of the lake itself, surrounded by mainly wooded and bushy grasslands. The park supports a wide ecological diversity with Flamingos - Greater and Lesser - and other water birds being the major attractions of the area.
The ecosystem provides for about 56 different species of mammals including the white rhino and buffaloes and a variety of terrestrial birds numbering nearly 450 species.
Getting to Lake Nakuru National Park.
Lake Nakuru National park lies about 140km north-west of Nairobi, in the Rift Valley Province. There are 3 entrances to the park-the main gate and the park headquarters are about 1km south of Nakuru town, while about 8km east of Nakuru, on the right off the A104, it’s about 2km to Lanet gate. The Nderit gate is on the southeastern boundary. The park is accessible with 2WD.

The park is dominated by the shallow soda lake, Nakuru, renowned for its concentration of lesser flamingos - up to 1.5 million at a certain times of the year. Lake Nakuru was designated Kenya’s first Ramsar site in 1990, its wetland being of international importance for waterfowl, among them greater flamingos and giant white pelicans, as well as palaearctic migrants. The birdlife is superb with over 450 recorded bird species. Game viewing in Lake Nakuru is good too. You will see Zebra, impala, Defassa waterbuck, Rothschild and many other wildlife.
