The park was opened in 1968 and covers an area of 870km. it became famous for its association with the film. ‘Born free’ Elsa the lioness and the work of joy and George Adamson.
Getting to Meru National Park.
From Meru take the C91 tarmac road signposted to Maua. Winding through the Nyambane hills to the small town of kangeta ( about 40km) after which it’s about 5km to the turn-off to Meru National Park on the left (several kilometers before reaching Maua).
Major attractions in Meru National Park.
Flora and fauna straddling the Equator the is dominated by Savanna, but includes diverse woodland. It’s bisected by 13 rivers which flow roughly parallel towards the Tana River in the southeast, separated by lava flows, fed by mountain streams running off the Nyambeni Hills.
Accommodation Options in Meru National Park.
Within the park there are lodges like Leopard Rock Lodge. The lodge has extremely spacious large, thatched cottages decorated in a Lamu-cum-Africa theme, with rich furnishings and en-suite shower rooms. The main building has a lounge, bar, dining are facing on to the Murera river a narrow, perennial stream surrounded by leafy bushes and doum palms.
There is also Elsa’s Kopje, located on Mughwango Hill, the site of Goerge Adamson’s original camp.
There are Kenya Wildlife Services Bandas and camping - Bwatherongi Bandas and Public Campsite. The camp has basic facilities- showers and toilets –and there are 4 self-catering bandas, one double and 3 single which have a sitting-room, bedroom with a mosquito net and Tilley lamp, shower and flush toilets.
