Sibiloi National Park

The Sibiloi National Park opened in 1973 following the Koobi For a finds of hominids by Richard Leakey in the 1960s and 1970s. it has become a world heritage site in 1997.

Getting to Sibiloi National Park.
By Road:
It takes about 3 days travel. High clearance 4WD vehicle is essential. Travel in convoy too. Sibiloi National Park lies 800 kilometrers from Nairobi. It is a long, hot dusty drive from Loyangalani to Sibiloi National Park. Follow the C77 north for about 45km, and then turn left on to a track to the park. Ask for clear directions from Loyangalani as it is easy to get lost. The road continues north through the Bura Hills to the small settlement of Hurran Hurra (about 40km) where there is left turn to another small settlement Gajos (about 45km), after which the road descends for another 40km to the souther end of the park at Alia Bay, continuing north through the park to Koobi Fora and Ileret. Alternative transport options is to fly to the Koobi For a airstrip and then hire an old NMK Land

Rover for game drives around the park, or to come by boat on an organized excursion from Lobolo Springs.

By air:
There are 2 all weather strips

Major attractions in Sibiloi National Park.
Flora and fauna. The park covers 1,570km, dominated by yellow spear grass on the plains and doum plams, there is no water inland from the lake but the park has surprising amount of game in its stark environment. Animals such as Grant’s gazelle, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, lesser kudu, cheetah and the rare striped hyena are found here. On the shore the crocodiles mate and nest during November and December, with the baby crocodiles hatching in March.

Birdlife is varied, from ducks, pelicans and flamingos to the rare Taita falcon and black-tailed godwit.

Accommodation options in Koobi Fora.
In Koobi For a there is simple but perfect acceptable accommodation in the National Museums of Kenya bandas which have mesh windows and separate ablution block with showers and toilets. At the southern of the park there are several campsites on Alia Bay, but these only have basic facilities.
