Ndere Island National Park is located in the Winam Gulf about 50km from Kisumu. This small island of 4.5km was given national park status in 1986 to protect the birdlife and natural vegetation. The name ‘Ndere’ means ‘meeting point’ in the Luo language.
According to Luo legend, Kit Mikaye, mother of the tribe, stopped here on her journey south from the Nile valley, and finding the island so attractive, decided to settle with her people.

Birdlife is prolific, including magnificent fish eagles and swifts. Wildlife includes hippo and less familiar spotted crocodile, both of which are commonly seen, and small herd of introduced impala in the woodland fringing the shoreline. Ideal for walking safaris.
