Mahale National park - Tanzania
The other sanctuary of the chimpanzee, Mahale Mountains National Park, is also reached by boat from Kigoma. It covers an area of approximately 1,000 sq km.
Getting Mahale Mountains National Park:
Between a four and nine hour boat trip, depending on the boat from Kigoma. Or a two hour flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam.
Attractions at Mahale Mountains National Park
The Chimpanzee population is estimated around 1,000 and they may be observed in their natural habitat groups of up to 30. Some of the other animals found in the park are the baboons, colobus monkeys, buffalo, bush pig, elephant, giraffe, leopard, lion, porcupine and various types of antelope.
Accommodation Options at Mahale
There are five self-contained tourist bandas. Each banda has two rooms with twin beds, and a private bathroom. Kitchen facilities are available for self catering, and cooks can be hired locally to prepare meals. Bandas are suitable for students or other budget travellers.
